Charles Spurgeon – Truth is not Strengthened by Lies

5 Sep

Truth is a strong tower and never requires to be buttressed with error. God’s Word will stand against all man’s devices.

Martin Luther – Draw Water From The True Source

6 Jul

He who has made himself master of the principles and text of the word runs little risk of committing errors. A theologian should be thoroughly in possession of the basis and source of faith—that is to say, the Holy Scriptures. Armed with this knowledge it was that I confounded and silenced all my adversaries; for they seek not to fathom and understand the Scriptures; they run them over negligently and drowsily; they speak, they write, they teach, according to the suggestion of their heedless imaginations. My counsel is, that we draw water from the true source and fountain, that is, that we diligently search the Scriptures. He who wholly possesses the text of the Bible, is a consummate divine. One single verse, one sentence of the text, is of far more instruction than a whole host of glosses and commentaries, which are neither strongly penetrating nor armor of proof.

Herman Bavinck – The Sublime Majesty of God’s Revelation

29 Jun

The revelation of God in Christ does not ask for the support or approval of human beings. It posits and maintains itself in sublime majesty. Its authority is normative as well as causative. It fights for its own victory. It itself conquers human hearts and makes itself irresistible.

Herman Bavinck – Scripture: All Must Be Ordered By It

9 Jun

Not the church but Scripture is self-authenticating, the judge of controversies, and its own interpreter. Nothing may be put on a level with Scripture. Church, confession, tradition–all must be ordered and adjusted by it and submit themselves to it.

Herman Bavinck – The Power of Scripture

3 Jun

The content of faith, after all, lies outside of us and only becomes our possession by faith. The intellect is not productive but receptive and is made receptive, sanctified, and renewed by the truth that comes to us from without, from Scripture.

Thomas Watson – How The Word Preached Works For Good

25 May

The Word preached works for good. It is a savour of life, it is a soul-transforming Word, it assimilates the heart into Christ’s likeness; it produces assurance. ‘Our gospel came to you not in word only, but in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance’ (1 Thess. 1:5). It is the chariot of salvation.
