Starting today and ending this Friday, September 23 any who wish will have the opportunity to win a copy of a book written by one of the old guys! We hope to have these giveaways from time to time and our desire is that this will help someone have the opportunity to dive deeper into a specific work by one of our beloved old guys.
This week’s giveaway features: John Owen.
J.I. Packer had this to say about him:
“Owen was by common consent the weightiest Puritan theologian, and many would bracket him with Jonathan Edwards as one of the greatest Reformed theologians of all time. “
The Book: Communion with the Triune God
WTS Books describes the book this way:
“Does it make a difference that the God Christians claim to worship has revealed himself as triune—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Does this fundamental truth of biblical authority have an effect on a believe’s personal fellowship with God?
Puritan theologian John Owen (1616-1683) recognized the great need for every believer to understand the triune God. Communion with the Triune God revisits the truth presented by John Owen and challenges all believers to truly recognize and appreciate the ministry that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit have in their lives. This work of John Owen encourages Christians to enjoy true communion with each person of the triune God.”
To Win All You Have to Do Is:
1. Leave a comment below and answer the question “Who is your favorite old guy?”.
2. Subscribe to The Old Guys via RSS, Email, Facebook or Twitter and help get the word out about the old guys!
A winner will be chosen at random and contacted via email.
It’s hard to pick just one. For sheer pithiness it would have to be Luther. For profundity probably Calvin. For deep truths I can most easily apply to my life it would be Spurgeon.
My favorite old guy is Oswald Chambers!
There are so many wonderful ‘old guys’ but one of my favourites would have to be J. C. Ryle. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway!
My favourite old guy is Jonathan Edwards. 🙂
I would have to say that right now Spurgeon probably tops my Old Guy list.
Jonathan Edwards
It would be a toss up between Thomas Watson and J.C. Ryle. Both of these old guys are extremely good. Thomas Watson’s treatment on the Shorter Catechism and J.C. Ryle’s book ‘Holiness’ would have to be in the top ten books of spiritually edifying books that I’ve read in my years as a Christian.
I love the old guys but my favorite is Thomas Manton. I also like Jonathan Edwards a lot.
That’s a really Tuff question. In an effort to be different, and because I’m enjoying his writing way to much these days I’ll have to go with Jeremiah Burroughs.
Wow! “My favorite old guy???” That’s tough! I have so many favorites. I think I would have to say my favorite is: J. C. Ryle. Second favorite: A. W. Tozer. Third favorite: Charles Spurgeon. Fourth favorite: Andrew Murray. I could keep on! 🙂
As mentioned above, there are so many great candidates! However, Spurgeon is by far my favorite old guy! There is no other author on this side of heaven that I can read that envelopes me entirely and leads me to the throne in worship like Spurgeon.
Favorite old guy is probably John Bunyan Already signed up through RSS feed
How do you categorize such a thing. I love Calvin for his ability to make complex theological questions understandable. I love Bavinck for his wealth of knowledge on subjects and his ability to write with such clarity. I love Spurgeon because of his passion, his love of truth and the way his sermons just bring me to my knees.
So far, in my journey with these men that are indwelt with the spirit of God, John Owen is by far the one that has most impacted my walk. The writings of John Owen blow my mind, or I should say my heart. Upon reading his book Indwelling Sin in Believers I was shown How to understand the thoughts and intentions of my heart! How is it possible for a man to read my heart? Well, at least it seems as if he does anyway. I have read this book at work at home and even on the tread mill! It will be worn out before long.
My favorite “old guy” is Spurgeon. His sermons speak through the years and seem to me to be as timely and appropriate today as were one hundred and fifty years ago.
Spurgeon immediately came to mind but oh how I LOVE Ryle and Pink……
I think for me its between J.C. Ryle and Jonathan Edwards.
It seems to vary from month to month. I think for the moment I’d have to go for CT Studd
thank you for the giveaway..love Owen and sure would like to have this book…
have a blessed Monday..

Matthew Henry
Hard to pick just one, but I’d probably have to say John Calvin.
“Who is your favorite old guy?” I really love John Owen!
JC Ryle. I do like them all and appreciate your sharing the wealth of these men
How old? 20th century: Chesterton. 19th century: Spurgeon. I could go on….
I really appreciate Spurgeon. What a blessing he has been to me. Also, Ryle is one of my favorites
My favorite old guy is Henry Scougal.
I am thankful for JC Ryle. His teachings for young men is GREAT!
I am thankful for Spurgeon!! His writings have meant a lot to me.
Hmm…. JC Ryle favorite old guy
Calvin
J.C. Ryle. I would agree with Piper who says, “One thing that gives him power as a writer is the density of biblical saturation. Human opinions don’t get very far with me without explicit Bible foundation. So I like Ryle. He doesn’t take many steps without a Bible stone underneath his foot.”
Amen!
My favorite Old Guy is Samuel Rutherford, or William Gurnall, or . . .
I haven’t seen him on here, but I do enjoy George Whitefield. If you’re asking just for an “old guy” on this blog, probably Charles Spurgeon or possibly Jeremiah Burroughs.
Chris, any old guy goes. I recently read a biography on Whitefield and loved it. Hopefully, we can get some of his quotes up in the future!
I enjoy reading the daily quotes from The Old Guys…food for the soul!
My favorite old guy would be the Father of the first American Revival, Jonathan Edwards.
J. C. Ryle for sure. Will repost on FB.
Martin Luther.
My favorite “old guy” is John Owen!!
Spurgeon, Winslow, Luther, Calvin, Bunyan, Ryle, how can I pick one?
Wow..that is a tough question to answer.
Thomas Watson, Spurgeon or Octavius Winslow…well, those are my favorites for today. 🙂
Charles Bridges, without a doubt.
Charles Spurgeon. I even exchanged our national hero for him. (http://thrownscabbard.blogspot.com/2010/06/birthday-cake-i-wont-give-to-rizal.html)
am reading again John Owen’s The Death of Death in the Death of Christ on the effectual limited atonement – have learned so much more of the Priesthood of Jesus and why there can be no “prevenient” grace … count me in for the book giveaway…
John Owen. His depth and grasp of scripture always provide me “pause”
Spurgeon and Thomas Watson are my 2 favorite, but with Watson it is a love/hate relationship because he is so dang convicting.
So far, my favourite old guy is Martin Luther.
My favorite old guy, thus far, is Spurgeon.
already subscribed! Really enjoying reading a few of John Owen’s other books.
Favorite old guy?…………Spurgeon, Winslow, Luther, Calvin, Bunyan, Ryle, how can I pick one?!!! I agree with Carol 🙂
Spurgeon is my favorite, although I’m excited to read more old guys like Watson, Manton and Sibbes.
So hard to pick, but probably Spurgeon.
John Flavel
Hard to pick just one… Jonathan Edwards and John Owen. The former for his radically theocentric vision of all of life, the latter for his unapologetic love and vehemence for the glory of Christ and His work on the cross.
my favorite is Jonathan Edwards
J.C. Ryle (among many others!).
John Flavel, because of the beauty that he uses in adorning the doctrines of Jesus Christ.
I would have to say Luther, for his humility. But that John Paton autobiography is one of my favorites.
Agreed! Paton’s autobiography is amazing!
My favorite old guy is Charles Spurgeon.
Richard Baxter
I’m deeply indebted to Calvin, Packer, and Piper (who isn’t that old, relatively speaking).
I’d have to say Luther right now.
It’s gotta be Spurgeon!
My favorite ‘old guy’ is… a toss up between Calvin, Luther and Edwards and Spurgeon and Ryle and…yes, John Owen (through several quotes sites), though I have to admit that I am not too well-read in any of them.
I would have to say B. B. Warfield. Good day Gens.
Jonathan Edwards. I can remember reading “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” for the first time in High school, only to have by teacher bash it and race away from Edwards to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter.” However, I could not help let go of the power of Edward’s words…I was captivated by his words. Almost 25 years later I am still captivated by the power of his writing.
My favorite is CH Spurgeon
This is a hard question. My favorite old guy is probably Spurgeon, but then there’s Ryle, Flavel, Burroughs, Owen…
My favorite has always been Jonathan Edwards.
John Owen is my favorite old guy. Really.
John owen
Hear,Hear….John Owen!
I like Charles Spurgeon, however since recieving the old guys I get alot of different insight and found that I like several of them.
Mark Cantley
John Bunyan
My Favorite Old Guy is Charles Spurgeon. I don’t have any books by John Owen I can’t put him in the Favorite category.
Owen, Bunyan or Ryle.
George Mueller!
I would have to say Luther. His boldness while going against the RCC was incredible.
There are so many great “old guys” but I’d have to say that Spurgeon is my favorite right now. I’m just starting his “Treasury of David” as I’m reading through the Psalms — what a blessing!
My favorite Old Guy is Spurgeon.
My Favorite Old Guy is Thomas Watson!!
It is Charles Spurgeon for me. In Almost every sermon, he heads straight for the cross, no matter the text.
John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards. 🙂
My favorite is Jonathan Edwards!
Where are the reformed pastors like Richard Baxter and the hearts of compassion like Thomas Chalmers?
Casiodoro de Reina. A forgotten reformer. (http://missionsoutlook.blogspot.com/2011/09/cipriano-de-valera-spanish-reformer.html)
C. H. Spurgeon for sure! We’re expecting our first child at the moment, and if it’s a boy his name will be Charles in his honor 🙂
As with many of those above, Mr. Spurgeon! He speaks to us “layfolk” so well! But, I enjoy any and all of them really….thanks for this site. It is great to be reminded of such words and works by those who love Christ.
A. W. Tozer is my favorite quote guy: straight to the heart, God-exalting, and Cross-declaring. You will find a number of Tozer’s quotes on my blog, The Glorious Deeds of Christ, http://www.canonglenn.com.
A. W. Tozer is one of my favorite “old guys! He sometimes came across too strong for lots of “Christians” but you could be sure that he knew what he was talking about, and stayed with Scripture while doing so. I love his writings!
As of right now, Jonathan Edwards.
John G. Paton
J.C. Ryle
Lately, it has been Spurgeon. Though I am discovering more gems of Owen and Calvin.
I’m hoping to ‘throw my name in the hat’ to win the current giveaway, but I can’t find the hat.
My name is Laura, and I have subscribed on Facebook : )
It’s hard to choose just one, but I will have to go with J.C. Ryle.
Jonathan Edwards
My favorite “old guy” is the ‘prince of preachers’, Charles Spurgeon.
Favorite old guy: my father
Andrew Murray & JC Ryle.
Thomas Watson is my very favorite “old guy”. It is amazing how relevant and clear his writing is. He never fails to speak to me. He is followed by J. C. Ryle and Charles Spurgeon. I feel blessed to be able to read their words.
My favorite old guy is the Bishop J.C. Ryle.
favorite… C.S. Lewis and J.C. Ryle. hope to win this book so i can see why lots of ppl love Owen!
Favorite Old Guy: J.C. Ryle!
Guess I’m in both the majority and a decided minority: love Ryle, Tozer, Spurgeon, Owen, MacLaren and John Wesley. Wesley’s passion for holiness and evangelizing the lost were greatly used of God to put me in the ministry.
JC Ryle and Martin Lloyd-Jones
Ryle and Spurgeon for me.
Jeremiah Burroughs is my favorite “old guy.” However, there are so many to choose, this is a tough question.
Wow. Love many but A.W. Tozer is my most recent read.
Charles Spurgeon. Does he ever say anything without it being totally cool?
My favorite is whomever I happen to be reading at the moment. But if I really have to limit it to one, I’d say Spurgeon.
I like Tozer, Spurgeon, and Luther.
I like Spurgeon alot but I have really been getting to know J.C. Ryle and he is becoming a favorite too.
I agree, how to choose. Currently J.C. Ryle. Get daily quotes and love them.
Right now my favorite old guy is Jonathan Edwards.
With out a doubt, the redwood of the Puritan’s… John Owen! A close second would be Edwards, Baxter, Burroughs, and Spurgeon.
I like John Calvin and John Owen. The Theologian and the Prince of Puritans.
