The Old Guys Book Giveaway!

19 Sep

Starting today and ending this Friday, September 23 any who wish will have the opportunity to win a copy of a book written by one of the old guys! We hope to have these giveaways from time to time and our desire is that this will help someone have the opportunity to dive deeper into a specific work by one of our beloved old guys.

This week’s giveaway features: John Owen.

J.I. Packer had this to say about him:

“Owen was by common consent the weightiest Puritan theologian, and many would bracket him with Jonathan Edwards as one of the greatest Reformed theologians of all time. “

The Book: Communion with the Triune God

WTS Books describes the book this way:

“Does it make a difference that the God Christians claim to worship has revealed himself as triune—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Does this fundamental truth of biblical authority have an effect on a believe’s personal fellowship with God?

Puritan theologian John Owen (1616-1683) recognized the great need for every believer to understand the triune God. Communion with the Triune God revisits the truth presented by John Owen and challenges all believers to truly recognize and appreciate the ministry that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit have in their lives. This work of John Owen encourages Christians to enjoy true communion with each person of the triune God.”

To Win All You Have to Do Is:

1. Leave a comment below and answer the question “Who is your favorite old guy?”.
2. Subscribe to The Old Guys via RSS, Email, Facebook or Twitter and help get the word out about the old guys!

A winner will be chosen at random and contacted via email.

It’s hard to pick just one. For sheer pithiness it would have to be Luther. For profundity probably Calvin. For deep truths I can most easily apply to my life it would be Spurgeon.

  2. Beth - An Australian Housewife September 19, 2011 at 6:40 am #

There are so many wonderful ‘old guys’ but one of my favourites would have to be J. C. Ryle. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in this giveaway!

  3. Nathan Korten September 19, 2011 at 6:47 am #

My favourite old guy is Jonathan Edwards. 🙂

  4. Sheldon Clowdus September 19, 2011 at 7:13 am #

I would have to say that right now Spurgeon probably tops my Old Guy list.

  5. brian molloy September 19, 2011 at 7:15 am #

    Jonathan Edwards

  6. Patty Mellen September 19, 2011 at 7:15 am #

It would be a toss up between Thomas Watson and J.C. Ryle. Both of these old guys are extremely good. Thomas Watson’s treatment on the Shorter Catechism and J.C. Ryle’s book ‘Holiness’ would have to be in the top ten books of spiritually edifying books that I’ve read in my years as a Christian.

  7. H. Carl Bone September 19, 2011 at 7:24 am #

I love the old guys but my favorite is Thomas Manton. I also like Jonathan Edwards a lot.

  8. bushums September 19, 2011 at 7:32 am #

That’s a really Tuff question. In an effort to be different, and because I’m enjoying his writing way to much these days I’ll have to go with Jeremiah Burroughs.

  9. Katherine Sewell September 19, 2011 at 7:59 am #

Wow! “My favorite old guy???” That’s tough! I have so many favorites. I think I would have to say my favorite is: J. C. Ryle. Second favorite: A. W. Tozer. Third favorite: Charles Spurgeon. Fourth favorite: Andrew Murray. I could keep on! 🙂

  10. Cassie C September 19, 2011 at 8:01 am #

As mentioned above, there are so many great candidates! However, Spurgeon is by far my favorite old guy! There is no other author on this side of heaven that I can read that envelopes me entirely and leads me to the throne in worship like Spurgeon.

  11. Jason September 19, 2011 at 8:12 am #

Favorite old guy is probably John Bunyan Already signed up through RSS feed

  12. Dennis Mullen September 19, 2011 at 8:12 am #

How do you categorize such a thing. I love Calvin for his ability to make complex theological questions understandable. I love Bavinck for his wealth of knowledge on subjects and his ability to write with such clarity. I love Spurgeon because of his passion, his love of truth and the way his sermons just bring me to my knees.

  13. Brian wyatt September 19, 2011 at 8:20 am #

So far, in my journey with these men that are indwelt with the spirit of God, John Owen is by far the one that has most impacted my walk. The writings of John Owen blow my mind, or I should say my heart. Upon reading his book Indwelling Sin in Believers I was shown How to understand the thoughts and intentions of my heart! How is it possible for a man to read my heart? Well, at least it seems as if he does anyway. I have read this book at work at home and even on the tread mill! It will be worn out before long.

  14. Gary September 19, 2011 at 8:26 am #

My favorite “old guy” is Spurgeon. His sermons speak through the years and seem to me to be as timely and appropriate today as were one hundred and fifty years ago.

  15. Sandy September 19, 2011 at 8:32 am #

Spurgeon immediately came to mind but oh how I LOVE Ryle and Pink……

  16. Chris September 19, 2011 at 8:41 am #

I think for me its between J.C. Ryle and Jonathan Edwards.

  17. Ben Thorp September 19, 2011 at 8:46 am #

    Calvin

  31. J Knisely September 19, 2011 at 9:45 am #

J.C. Ryle. I would agree with Piper who says, “One thing that gives him power as a writer is the density of biblical saturation. Human opinions don’t get very far with me without explicit Bible foundation. So I like Ryle. He doesn’t take many steps without a Bible stone underneath his foot.”

    • Brian wyatt September 19, 2011 at 3:24 pm #

      Amen!

  32. Luke September 19, 2011 at 9:56 am #

  33. Chris H. September 19, 2011 at 10:02 am #

I haven’t seen him on here, but I do enjoy George Whitefield. If you’re asking just for an “old guy” on this blog, probably Charles Spurgeon or possibly Jeremiah Burroughs.

    • Bentley September 19, 2011 at 10:43 am #

Chris, any old guy goes. I recently read a biography on Whitefield and loved it. Hopefully, we can get some of his quotes up in the future!

  34. erniepeacock September 19, 2011 at 10:03 am #

I enjoy reading the daily quotes from The Old Guys…food for the soul!

    Charles Bridges, without a doubt.

  42. Marianna September 19, 2011 at 10:32 am #

John Owen. His depth and grasp of scripture always provide me “pause”

  44. Walt Murray September 19, 2011 at 10:43 am #

Spurgeon and Thomas Watson are my 2 favorite, but with Watson it is a love/hate relationship because he is so dang convicting.

    John Flavel

  52. Patrick September 19, 2011 at 11:54 am #

Hard to pick just one… Jonathan Edwards and John Owen. The former for his radically theocentric vision of all of life, the latter for his unapologetic love and vehemence for the glory of Christ and His work on the cross.

  53. vince matherick September 19, 2011 at 11:54 am #

    my favorite is Jonathan Edwards

  54. Mr. & Mrs. V. September 19, 2011 at 12:09 pm #

    J.C. Ryle (among many others!).

John Flavel, because of the beauty that he uses in adorning the doctrines of Jesus Christ.

  56. Michael Salvatierra September 19, 2011 at 12:45 pm #

I would have to say Luther, for his humility. But that John Paton autobiography is one of my favorites.

    • Bentley September 19, 2011 at 1:25 pm #

      Agreed! Paton’s autobiography is amazing!

  57. Linda Tkaczyk September 19, 2011 at 12:46 pm #

    It’s gotta be Spurgeon!

  62. Stephen Richie September 19, 2011 at 1:59 pm #

My favorite ‘old guy’ is… a toss up between Calvin, Luther and Edwards and Spurgeon and Ryle and…yes, John Owen (through several quotes sites), though I have to admit that I am not too well-read in any of them.

  63. Anthony Spallone September 19, 2011 at 2:50 pm #

I would have to say B. B. Warfield. Good day Gens.

  64. John Clayton September 19, 2011 at 3:43 pm #

Jonathan Edwards. I can remember reading “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” for the first time in High school, only to have by teacher bash it and race away from Edwards to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter.” However, I could not help let go of the power of Edward’s words…I was captivated by his words. Almost 25 years later I am still captivated by the power of his writing.

  65. Cho September 19, 2011 at 4:26 pm #

    My favorite is CH Spurgeon

  66. persis September 19, 2011 at 4:32 pm #

  77. Marny September 20, 2011 at 9:32 am #

There are so many great “old guys” but I’d have to say that Spurgeon is my favorite right now. I’m just starting his “Treasury of David” as I’m reading through the Psalms — what a blessing!

  86. Cathy September 21, 2011 at 3:00 pm #

As with many of those above, Mr. Spurgeon! He speaks to us “layfolk” so well! But, I enjoy any and all of them really….thanks for this site. It is great to be reminded of such words and works by those who love Christ.

  87. Glenn E Davis September 22, 2011 at 9:47 am #

    A. W. Tozer is my favorite quote guy: straight to the heart, God-exalting, and Cross-declaring. You will find a number of Tozer’s quotes on my blog, The Glorious Deeds of Christ, http://www.canonglenn.com.

  88. Katherine Sewell September 22, 2011 at 12:09 pm #

    A. W. Tozer is one of my favorite “old guys! He sometimes came across too strong for lots of “Christians” but you could be sure that he knew what he was talking about, and stayed with Scripture while doing so. I love his writings!

  89. Erin C. September 22, 2011 at 2:27 pm #

As of right now, Jonathan Edwards.

Guess I’m in both the majority and a decided minority: love Ryle, Tozer, Spurgeon, Owen, MacLaren and John Wesley. Wesley’s passion for holiness and evangelizing the lost were greatly used of God to put me in the ministry.

  109. Leah September 23, 2011 at 9:49 am #
