Read A Puritan Theology With Tim Challies

12 Sep

Tim Challies recently posted on his blog an invitation for anyone interested to read along with him in A Puritan Theology:

Last year Reformation Heritage Books released A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life. This work by Joel Beeke and Mark Jones surveys the major doctrines of the Christian faith to find what the Puritans believed. It is a very good book and one that has been a blessing to me. The book looks and sounds intimidating, but is actually surprisingly easy to read, to understand, and to digest. It is exactly the kind of book many of us want to read, but lack the motive or opportunity. I want to help with that.

The final eight chapters are my favorites. They turn from systematic theology to theology in practice. Beeke and Jones show how the Puritans put all of this theology into practice in their lives, their homes, their churches. I read these eight chapters before I read anything else and want to invite you to do the same. They are a great warm-up to the rest of the book but they also stand well on their own.

So here is what I am proposing. Why don’t we read the final eight chapters of A Puritan Theology together. I think you will enjoy them and benefit from them just as much as I did. And just to sweeten the deal a little bit, Joel Beeke is going to join with me in preparing a once-weekly post exploring some of the themes. We will allow him to guide us through the book.

The question I want to ask before each of these chapters is this: What would the Puritans want us to know about life and doctrine? I want to hear how they might guide us, how they might encourage and critique us. And these chapters do that very thing. They focus on the Puritans’ pilgrim mentality as a means of understanding the Christian life; they focus on godly living in the home, on daily prayer and meditation, on conscience and zeal. Each of these is an area where we would do well to listen to those who have gone before us.

A Puritan Theology
Doctrine for Life
ed. by Joel Beeke & Mark Jones
Kindle Price: $9.99

A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life offers a groundbreaking treatment of the Puritans’ teaching on most major Reformed doctrines, particularly those doctrines in which the Puritans made significant contributions. Since the late 1950s, nearly 150 Puritan authors and 700 Puritan titles have been reprinted and catalogued by Joel Beeke and Randall Pederson in their 2006 collection of mini-biographies and book reviews, titled, Meet the Puritans. However, no work until now has gathered together the threads of their teaching into a unified tapestry of systematic theology.

Herman Bavinck On Marriage and the Family

25 Jul

Nelson Kloosterman and Christian’s Library Press recently did us all a service by translating Herman Bavinck’s work on the Christian family into English.

A century ago when this book was first published, marriage and the family were already weathering enormous changes, and that trend has not abated. Yet by God’s power the unchanging essence of marriage and the family remains proof, as Bavinck notes, that God’s “purpose with the human race has not yet been achieved.”

Neither a ten-step guide nor a one-sided approach, this book embodies a Christian theology of marriage and the family. Accessible, thoroughly biblical, and astonishingly relevant, it offers a mature and concise handling of the origins of marriage and family life and the effects of sin on these institutions, an appraisal of historic Christian approaches, and an attempt to apply that theology.

Aptly reminding Christians that “the moral health of society depends on the health of family life,” Bavinck issues an evergreen challenge to God’s people: “Christians may not permit their conduct to be determined by the spirit of the age, but must focus on the requirement of God’s commandment.”

If you’d like to hear more about this project The Reformed Forum did an interview with Dr. Kloosterman that was very informative.

The Book of Isaiah,
3 Volumes: $14.99

By Edward J. Young / Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co.

Young’s classic 3-volume commentary engages in a line-by-line exegesis of the Book of Isaiah, setting interpretation firmly in the context of Isaiah’s archaeological, cultural, and intellectual background. Young’s conclusions are theologically conservative, and though he believes Isaiah to be a unified, single-author book, he respectfully interacts with opposing views. Includes bibliographies and indexes. Volume 1 covers chapters 1-18; Volume 2 looks at chapters 19-39; Volume 3 surveys chapters 40-66.

Book Profile: Historical Theology by Gregg Allison

11 Apr

Historical Theology: An Introduction to Christian Doctrine

This amazing 785 page book was written by Gregg Allison and published in 2011 as a companion volume to Wayne Grudem’s Systematic Theology. In the book Dr. Allison shows the development of Christian doctrine since the time of Christ until today.

It is not your traditional companion volume, though. It mirrors the layout of Systematic Theology and generally follows the same chapter outline as it goes through different doctrines showing the historical development of theology in the history of the church.

And this is what makes it not your traditional historical theology volume either. Most historical theology books tell the story of the historical development of theology by walking through the different time periods. So, one section may highlight the development of doctrine in the 1600’s, perhaps highlighting the main doctrinal developments of that time, and then moving on to the next period of development.

What makes this book stand apart is how it takes each doctrine in isolation and shows the development of that doctrine throughout church history. Then the next chapter begins again with the next doctrine. This way you are able to stay focused on the specific doctrine at hand as the author displays the specific developments of the particular doctrine in the history of the church. Instead of getting lost in a sea of theological development for a certain time period.

What a great gift to the body of Christ!

I’m not sure how long this will last, but it is available on Kindle for $5.99 today. And is available in hardcover for it’s normal price of $32.98.
