Cornelius Van Til – A Definite Conception of Everything in the Created Universe

15 Jul

Van Till

It is not a sufficient description of Christian theism when we say that as Christians we believe in both the transcendence and the immanence of God while pantheistic systems believe only in the immanence of God and deistic systems believe only in the transcendence of God. The transcendence we believe in is not the transcendence of deism, and the immanence we believe in is not the immanence of pantheism. In the case of deism transcendence virtually means separation, while in the case of pantheism immanence virtually means identification. And if we add separation to identification, we do not have theism as a result. As we mean a certain kind of God when as theists we speak of God, so also we mean a certain kind of transcendence and a certain kind of immanence when we use these terms. The Christian doctrine of God implies a definite conception of the relation of God to the created universe. So also the Christian doctrine of God implies a definite conception of everything in the created universe.

Athanasius – Moving Mockers to See His Deity

12 Jul

Now, Macarius, true lover of Christ, we must take a step further in the faith of our holy religion, and consider also the Word’s becoming Man and His divine Appearing in our midst. That mystery the Jews traduce, the Greeks deride, but we adore; and your own love and devotion to the Word also will be the greater, because in His Manhood He seems so little worth. For it is a fact that the more unbelievers pour scorn on Him, so much the more does He make His Godhead evident. The things which they, as men, rule out as impossible, He plainly shows to be possible; that which they deride as unfitting, His goodness makes most fit; and things which these wiseacres laugh at as “human” He by His inherent might declares divine. Thus by what seems His utter poverty and weakness on the cross He overturns the pomp and parade of idols, and quietly and hiddenly wins over the mockers and unbelievers to recognise Him as God.

Cornelius Van Til – Bible Based Theism

11 Jul

Van Till

To engage in philosophical discussion does not mean that we begin without Scripture. We do not first defend theism philosophically by an appeal to reason and experience in order, after that, to turn to Scripture for our knowledge and defense of Christianity. We get our theism as well as our Christianity from the Bible.

Athanasius – Jesus Himself Is Divine

10 Jul

We also, by God’s grace, briefly indicated the Word of the Father is Himself divine, that all things that are owe their being to His will and power, and that it is through Him that the Father gives order to creation, by Him that all things are moved, and through Him that they receive their being.

Help Republish 500 Old Guy Books!

If you haven’t seen it, Deep Roots Library is a kindred website of The Old Guys. Their goal is to bring many of the great works from men of ages past to the web in easy to read and beautiful format.

Right now, they are in the midst of a drive via the website Kickstarter to raise $10,000 by July 21st and they are asking for any help you might be able to give.

Here is their goal:

Our goal is to re-publish 500 old Christian books. Available to read online, to download, or as physical books. Help us make it!

They then go on to address these questions:

500 Books? That seems like a lot.

It is a lot, but we can do it, and the goal is to be done by February. Here are a few things that make us think we can make it:

The books are already written!
Every text is run through our highly customized system that runs over 6,500 different fixes. Spellings & punctuation are modernized, Scripture references are standardized, and many typos are automatically corrected. By the time a human looks at the text, well over 50% of the mistakes have already been corrected.
We have developed a blazing fast, easy to navigate website that gets out of the way and lets the content shine. It’s also mobile responsive, so it looks as good on a smartphone or tablet as it does on a desktop.

What will the money be used for?

Lots of stuff – it’s 500 books after all! Here are just a few of the costs we’re going to be dealing with, some of which are for every book.

ISBNs
Cover designs
Typesetting
Specific OCR software for pre-1800s texts (whose idea was the “long S”, anyway. Seriously.)
BOOK PRINTING!
Integrating book printing/shipping into the website.

Also, if you help support them there are many perks available at different giving levels. Here is a small sampling:

A gift of $100 or more gets you:
– (1) Digital copy of the entire Kickstarter project. That’s right, all 500 books (20¢ apiece)!
– (2) Deep Roots Library T-shirt,
– (3) everything from Reward #1.

A gift of $149 or more gets you:
**BOOK SPONSORSHIP!**
– (1) to provide free access to a book of your choice for believers worldwide,
– (2) to write a short dedication/foreword to the book,
– (3) a limited edition hardcover copy of the book
– (4) everything from the $1 and $100 levels!

A gift of $200 or more gets you:
**CHRISTMAS SPONSORSHIP!**
– (1) A Book Sponsorship from Reward #6, in a special gift wrapped package with letter-pressed card explaining that the book is published in their honoR
– (2) delivery in the early December, in plenty of time before Christmas,
– (3) a digital copy of the entire project, for you (the backer) AND for the receiver of the gift! Plus everything from Reward #1.

It looks like a pretty exciting and rewarding project!

For those of you who follow The Old Guys via Google Reader and RSS I wanted to give you the heads up that Google Reader will be discontinuing it’s service on Monday, July 1.

If you are wanting to find an alternative way to maintain your RSS feeds I can recommend a service called “Feedly.” It’s highly customizable and after using it for a few weeks I’ve come to like it. They also provide the syncing framework for other apps as well if you’d like to go with something else.

Also, you can always subscribe to The Old Guys via email by entering your address in the top right corner on this page.

Thanks,

Herman Bavinck – Is It Really Possible to Speak of God In Our Human Ways?

28 Jun

If as humans we may not speak of God in a human and analogical manner, we have no choice but to be silent. To think and speak divinely of God is beyond us. But then all religion implodes. If God cannot be known, neither can he be felt and, in that feeling, enjoyed. Feeling is as finite as the intellect and finitizes and humanizes God in the same way. No possibility then exists either of God revealing himself objectively in his creatures or of us subjectively perceiving him by any organ. All religion, then, is sacrilege and all theology blasphemy.

Given this outcome, the question concerning God’s knowability has been reduced to another question, namely, whether God has willed and found a way to reveal himself in the domain of creatures.

John Calvin – Sovereign Administering and Wickedness Shattering

27 Jun

In administering human society God so tempers his providence that, although kindly and beneficent toward all in numberless ways, he still by open and daily indications declares his clemency to the godly and his severity to the wicked and criminal. For there are no doubts about what sort of vengeance he takes on wicked deeds. Thus he clearly shows himself the protector and vindicator of innocence, while he prospers the life of good men with his blessing, relieves their need, soothes and mitigates their pain, and alleviates their calamities; and in all these things he provides for their salvation. And indeed the unfailing rule of his righteousness ought not to be obscured by the fact that he frequently allows the wicked and malefactors to exult unpunished for some time, while he permits the upright and deserving to be tossed about by many adversities, and even to be oppressed by the malice and iniquity of the impious. But a far different consideration ought, rather, to enter our minds: that, when with a manifest show of his anger he punishes one sin, he hates all sins; that, when he leaves many sins unpunished, there will be another judgment to which have been deferred the sins yet to be punished. Similarly, what great occasion he gives us to contemplate his mercy when he often pursues miserable sinners with unwearied kindness, until he shatters their wickedness by imparting benefits and by recalling them to him with more than fatherly kindness!
